Amoxicillin is an antibiotic with a broad spectrum of activity, utilized for the treatment of a range of bacterial infections. The dosage depends on the condition, severity, and patient’s age and weight.

1. Respiratory Tract Infections


A. Community-Acquired Pneumonia (CAP)


Adults: 1 g every 8 hours for 7–10 days.


Children: 45 mg/kg/day divided every 12 hours or 40 mg/kg/day divided every 8 hours for 7–10 days.



B. Acute Bacterial Sinusitis


Adults: 500 mg every 8 hours or 875 mg every 12 hours for 5–7 days.


Children: 45–90 mg/kg/day in two doses for 10–14 days.



C. Strep Throat (Streptococcal Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis)


Adults: 500 mg every 12 hours or 1,000 mg once daily for 10 days.


Children: 50 mg/kg/day once daily or divided into two doses for 10 days.




2. Ear, Nose, and Throat Infections


A. Acute Otitis Media (Ear Infection)


Adults: 500 mg every 8 hours or 875 mg every 12 hours for 5–7 days.


Children: 80–90 mg/kg/day divided every 12 hours for 7–10 days.



B. Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media


Adults & Children: 500 mg every 8 hours for 14 days.



3. Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)


Uncomplicated UTI (Cystitis)


Adults: 500 mg every 8 hours or 875 mg every 12 hours for 3–7 days.


Children: 40 mg/kg/day divided every 8–12 hours for 7 days.



Complicated UTI or Pyelonephritis


Adults: 1 g every 8 hours for 10–14 days.



4. Skin and Soft Tissue Infections


Adults & Children: 500 mg every 8 hours or 875 mg every 12 hours for 7–14 days.



5. Dental Infections (Abscess, Periodontitis)


Mild to Moderate Cases:


Adults: 500 mg every 8 hours for 3–7 days.



Severe Infections:


Adults: 875 mg every 12 hours for 7–10 days.



6. Gastrointestinal Infections


A. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) Eradication


Triple Therapy (Adults Only):


Amoxicillin: 1 g every 12 hours


Clarithromycin: 500 mg every 12 hours


Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI): e.g., Omeprazole 20 mg every 12 hours


Duration: 10–14 days.



7. Lyme Disease


Early Stage:


Adults: 500 mg every 8 hours for 14–21 days.


Children: 50 mg/kg/day divided every 8 hours for 14–21 days.



8. Endocarditis Prophylaxis (Before Dental Procedures in High-Risk Patients)


Adults: 2 g (single dose) 30–60 minutes before procedure.


Children: 50 mg/kg (single dose).



9. Bone and Joint Infections


Osteomyelitis:


Adults: 1 g every 8 hours for 6 weeks.



10. Typhoid Fever


Adults & Children: 75–100 mg/kg/day divided every 8 hours for 7–14 days.




Special Considerations


Renal Impairment: Reduce dose for GFR < 30 mL/min.


Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Generally safe but consult a d

octor.


Missed Dose: Take as soon as possible, but do not double dose.



Always complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed to prevent resistance.
